Drury recognizes Warren White Scholars and outstanding faculty

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Sept. 1, 2017 — Drury University recognized outstanding faculty and second-year students at its 2017 Opening Convocation. The ceremony officially began Drury’s 144th academic year with an address from President Tim Cloyd.

“The intent of Drury and the Drury Spirit has always been about attempting to bridge divides,” Cloyd said in an address that called the audience to consider their role in social and political issues facing the country. “Our faculty have always been the ones who have held this spirit high and defended the core of Drury. I want to thank this great faculty for this courageous tradition in this part of the world. You carry this core today.”

Nominations for Faculty Awards are received from students, faculty, administrators and alumni.  A committee of students and faculty selects the winners. The honorees were recognized for challenging, engaging and inspiring students both inside and outside the classroom.

The 2017 Faculty Award winners are:

  • Faculty Award for Advising: Jonathan Groves, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication
  • Faculty Award for Liberal Learning: Nancy Chikaraishi, M. Arch., Professor of Architecture
  • Faculty Award for Scholarship: Daniel Ponder, Ph.D., L.E. Meador Professor of Political Science & Prof. Todd Lowery, M.F.A., Professor of Art
  • Faculty Award for Teaching: Shelley Wolbrink, Ph.D., Professor of History and Director of Medieval Studies
  • Faculty Award for Leadership: Elizabeth Gackstetter Nichols, Ph.D., Professor of Spanish

In addition, the Judge Warren White Scholars were honored. Each honoree will receive a $450 scholarship. These students have the highest grade point averages after completion of their first year at Drury. Mr. Warren White graduated from Drury in 1904 and served as a Greene County circuit court judge for 36 years.

“World-class education and teaching informed by scholarship and artistic practice – that is our calling,” Cloyd said in address to a packed auditorium at Clara Thompson Hall. “A liberal arts university imparts through its academic programs fundamental competencies that cultivate that ability to think about the world in which we live. It sows seeds that enable students to grow in ethical, intellectual, creative, communicative, and social qualities that are absolutely necessary – indeed, essential – for success, for a fulfilled life, and for leadership.”

Outstanding Drury faculty & students recognized at opening convocation

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 21, 2014 — Drury University recognized outstanding faculty and second year students at the 2014 Matriculation Convocation this morning. The event served as the formal opening ceremony for the Drury’s 141st academic year, with an address from the president and the raising of the Class of 2018 flag.

President David Manuel told the first-year students in attendance that the journey to career success is a long one, and likened Drury to a base camp where they’ll begin their ascent.

“The liberation of your thinking is fundamental to your ultimate success as you reach the summit,” he said, “and the faculty are here to help you on your way.”

A student and faculty committee selects recipients of the Faculty Awards. The committee receives nominations from students, faculty, administrators and alumni. Each of the honorees is recognized for challenging, engaging and inspiring students both inside and outside the classroom.

Welcoming a new class and honoring Drury’s top students and faculty at the Matriculation Convocation

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., August 22, 2013 — Drury University’s new president welcomed the new class, and the University recognized outstanding faculty members and second year students at the 2013 Matriculation Convocation on Thursday, Aug. 22 in Clara Thompson Hall.

Dr. David Manuel, who became Drury’s 17th president on June 1, 2013, told the new class, “I, too, am beginning a new adventure. Together we will progress to new summits, and throughout this adventure you and I have to remember that we cannot reach our goals alone. Just as I will, I encourage you to use all of the tools, talents and resources available to you at Drury University to move forward and to reach your own goals.”
