SPRINGFIELD, Mo., March 5, 2012 — Due to an outstanding response, Drury University sororities have extended the deadline to collect prom dresses for victims of the May 22 Joplin Tornado.
Last Thursday, 53 dresses had been collected. As of Monday morning, that number stood at 96. The Joplin Prom Ambush, a team of industry leaders who have volunteered their talents to host this event, has asked several Missouri colleges and universities to collect used prom dresses for the girls of Joplin High School.
Dresses can be dropped off in the Student Activities Center in the basement of the Findlay Student Center. All four of Drury’s sororities are collecting dresses: Kappa Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Pi Beta Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha, along with the Panhellenic Council, the governing body of Drury’s sorority chapters.
“We are so thankful to the people who dropped off all of these dresses in such a short amount of time,” said Abby Glenn, Drury Panhellenic Co-Advisor. “We hope these dresses will help the Joplin High School students have a great prom and help take their minds off of what has been a difficult year.”
The young women will “shop” for their dresses on March 10 in Joplin. The Joplin Prom Ambush team will provide a disc jockey, pictures, food, free dresses and tuxedos.
