Drury student is recognized by the national Kappa Alpha Fraternity

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Dec. 7, 2010 — Steven Blackshear had no idea that approximately one year after he was initiated into Drury’s Beta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Fraternity that he would be recognized as the 150,000th initiate in the fraternity’s history. On Nov. 9, 2010, the Knight Commander of Kappa Alpha presented Blackshear with a special KA badge and gave the Drury chapter a plaque commemorating Blackshear’s accomplishment. “It made me proud to be a KA and know that I was joined with 150,000 brothers,” said Blackshear.

Kappa Alpha, which was established as a national men’s collegiate social fraternity in 1865, has been tracking membership through “badge numbers” issued to each initiate since the fraternity’s founding.  After the national records were reviewed in Lexington, Va., Kappa Alpha determined that Blackshear was the 150,000th member.

Blackshear, a 2009 Logan-Rogersville High School graduate, is a sophomore, pre-med major at Drury and plays an active role in Kappa Alpha fraternity.  He has held the appointed position of Corresponding Secretary and Recruitment Chairmen, and he has also served on the Interfraternity Council (IFC).  Andrea Battaglia, Director of Greek Life & Student Involvement at Drury praised Blackshear saying, “He is an essential member of our IFC on campus and we hope that he moves into major leadership roles in the chapter and Greek community in the near future.”

A Drury graduate’s movie is part of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Dec. 6, 2010 — Drury graduate Chris Beckman has been invited to attend the 2011 Sundance Film Festival where his video, oops, will be screened in the short film program.  Beckman’s video was one of 81 short films chosen for the festival which will be held in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah January 20-30.

Beckman describes his video as, “A lucid, seamless voyage through the Internet’s infinite repository of ‘throwaway’ social documentation and into the humanity of everyday life – via YouTube’s clumsiest videographers.”

Beckman began the project by selecting 100-150 videos off of YouTube of people doing accidental things, such as, dropping the camera. Eventually, Beckman used portions of 40-45 YouTube videos. “It’s cool that people feel free enough to upload videos of them dropping the camera,” Beckman said. “It’s another thing that kind of attracted me to the videos. Salvaging almost useless things to make something that people want to watch.”

Beckman, who graduated from Drury in May 2010 with a degree in Fine Arts in the Department of Art and Art History, originally created the piece for a class called Video Art co-taught by Drury professors Blaine Whisenhunt and Greg Booker with assistance from Brian Shipman, a Drury video instructor.

On being selected for Sundance, Beckman said, “I was really surprised. Definitely pleased. When I first started this project I thought it was a class assignment that I could expand to play in a gallery. The fact that it got a life of its own and all kinds of people appreciate it kind of floored me. It’s exciting.”

Earlier this year, oops won a Vimeo Award, which honors videos that premiere online.

Beckman plans to attend the Sundance Film Festival next month. Eventually, he hopes to go to graduate school where he will study film or art.

Drury University earns silver rating from Ozarks GreenScore

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Dec. 2, 2010 — At today’s Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce “Good Morning, Springfield!” breakfast at Drury University, Dr. Wendy Anderson announced that Drury has achieved a silver rating from Ozarks GreenScore. Ozarks GreenScore is designed to educate, encourage and assist local organizations in developing environmentally sustainable practices.

“The most useful thing about GreenScore is not the marketing value of achieving a rating,” said Anderson, director of campus sustainability at Drury. “Really, GreenScore is about evaluating how well you are doing and areas where your organization can improve. GreenScore gives you a tool where you can prioritize sustainability projects for the future.”

Businesses and organizations that participate in GreenScore earn ratings ranging from bronze, silver, and gold with green being the highest. The organizations conduct a self-assessment on key criteria such as waste management, energy management, water usage, landscaping, etc. Throughout the multi-step assessment and improvement process, technical assistance is available from the Ozarks GreenScore Technical Team of experts from local agencies and not-for-profits, facilitated by the City of Springfield’s Solid Waste Management Market Development staff.

Choose Environmental Excellence (CEE), a sponsoring GreenScore partner, encourages recognition for businesses that make improvements as they progress in achieving the increasingly more challenging program levels.

“The goal of Ozarks GreenScore mirrors that of the sponsoring organizations and Technical Team–to bring awareness of the negative impact we all make on our natural environment, to educate and assist in the adoption of better practices and to celebrate the successes,” says Barbara Lucks, City of Springfield Materials Recovery/Education Coordinator and CEE Project Manager.

GreenScore determined that Drury could improve communication of sustainability efforts to the campus, and do more to encourage suggestions on how to improve sustainability. Drury scored well for having an environmental mission statement, its community involvement and outreach, and for energy management efforts such as: solar panels on Smith Hall, geothermal heating and cooling in Stone Chapel and the elimination of trays from the dining hall.

Ozarks GreenScore was developed collaboratively by Choose Environmental Excellence, the Partnership for Sustainability, Drury SIFE and the Ozarks Center for Sustainable Solutions. The Ozarks GreenScore program is voluntary and non-regulatory. The only cost is a $75 assessment fee for each certification.

A Drury Christmas tradition is now a book

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Dec. 1, 2010 — Every holiday season, artist Jacqueline Warren gifts her colleagues at Drury with a lovely, hand-drawn portrait of angels. A tradition for over 25 years, this inspired an enchanting new book.

Annual Angels: Sharing the Good News was written by Dr. Jim Murrow, a retired professor at Drury University. Warren’s annual Christmas Angels from the past years have been collected and printed into the pages of this book.

Drury Wind Symphony in concert Wednesday, December 1

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Nov. 30, 2010 — The Drury University Wind Symphony and Saxophone Quartet will present their winter concert on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Clara Thompson Hall.

Artist creates pillows to memorialize suicide attacks in Iraq

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Nov. 29, 2010 — Benjamin June has made a pillow for every suicide attack in Iraq since the U.S. invasion on March 20, 2003. An exhibit of his pillows will debut at Drury’s Pool Art Center Gallery on Friday, Dec. 3 and it will run through Jan. 28*. June will conduct an artist talk at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.

The suicide attacks may be a small aspect of the war, but for June they are the most horrifying. To date, there have been more than 1,600 separate attacks that have left more than 17,500 people dead.

June makes small pillows because they are inherently intimate objects, and explore the physical intimacy of the suicide bombers with the people they kill. To explore the terror of the war, he has created something that is tangible and approachable. The pillows are accessible because they create a safer environment to process this brutality.

“I feel that these memorial pillows are not for the victims or for the attackers; they are for the whole, tragic situation,” June says. “I am attempting to raise awareness and open a dialogue about the number of deaths from these attacks that I believe our government and military are partially responsible for.”

The pillows have a top hash mark for the number of suicide attackers, a picture of the device used in the attack, and bottom hash marks for the number of victims. On the back is the date and target of the attack. The exhibition will consist of 1,702 pillows that June has created in memorial of these suicide attacks.
This exhibition is supported through a Community Arts Assistance Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and by a Special Assistance Grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The event is co-sponsored by Drury University’s 2010-2011 convocation series The Persistence of Memory, Perspectives on the Past, which examines history and how it relates to our understanding of the present.

A tradition continues with Drury’s Annual Christmas Vespers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Nov. 29, 2010 — The annual Drury University Christmas Vespers service will be held on Sunday, December 5, at 4 p.m. in Stone Chapel. The service includes both traditional and contemporary Christmas music, punctuated by the reading of The Christmas Story by Drury faculty members Rosemary Jackson, Stephen Bomgardner, and Drury Chaplain Peter Browning.

Drury’s Quidditch tournament earns local media coverage

Harry Potter’s chosen team sport came to Drury on Saturday, Nov. 20 as teams chased the snitch, tossed bludgers and handled the quaffle in Drury’s first-ever Quidditch tournament. Eight teams competed in the all-day tournament on Drury’s Sunderland Field. The tournament, held the day after the opening of the seventh movie installment in the Harry Potter series, earned the attention of several local media outlets.

Drury’s Department of Languages Receives a $20,000 Grant

SPRINGFIELD, Thursday, Nov. 19, 2010 — Drury University’s Department of Languages has received a $20,000 grant from the C.W. Titus Foundation to fund ten scholarships for foreign language study abroad.

Ten Drury students will receive up to $2000 each to help cover expenses directly related to study abroad education, including travel to and within the host country, tuition, food, lodging and educational supplies. The scholarship period will begin May 15, 2011 and continue to May 14, 2012 and include both short-term study abroad programs and semester-long (or year-long) programs. Scholarships are limited to full-time day students for the 2011-2012 school year.

Applications are accepted on an on-going basis for Drury study abroad programs that meet the above criteria. Department of Languages faculty will consider applications based on the following criteria: commitment to foreign language study, success in foreign language study, years in school and financial need.

The goal for these scholarships is to increase the understanding of international cultures not only for students, but also for the region. Students will be required, upon their return, to share their educational and cultural experiences with Drury and the larger community. This could include presentations in appropriate classes, university clubs, venues such as the campus Global Luncheon Series, or civic organizations. This also might include tutoring services on campus or with local elementary, middle school or high school students.

In the past four years, the CW Titus Foundation has awarded $74,000 to Drury’s Department of Languages through its scholarship program helping students study languages abroad in Europe, South America and Asia.

“The Department of Languages can think of no better way for the understanding of international cultures to occur than to have Drury’s best students acting as foreign language ambassadors at Drury and in the Springfield area,” says Dr. Patrick Moser, associate professor of French.

Drury Board of Trustees member Jack Shewmaker dies at 72

Drury Board of Trustees member Jack Shewmaker dies at 72

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Nov. 18, 2010 — Drury University is saddened by the passing of long-time Board of Trustees member Jack Shewmaker who died on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the age of 72.

“Jack’s passing is a great loss for the nation, the region and for Drury University,” said Drury President Todd Parnell. “He has been an invaluable counselor for Drury and his sage wisdom will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Melba, and the entire Shewmaker family.”

A member of the Drury Board of Trustees since 1984, Shewmaker served on the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee and the Development Committee. He received an honorary doctorate from Drury in 2000.

“Jack’s death represents a great loss to the Board of Trustees and to the entire Drury community,” said Lynn Chipperfield, chairman of the Drury Board of Trustees. “His vast business experience and his strong common sense contributed immeasurably to our Board discussions, always helping us stay focused on the greater mission of the University. We will deeply miss his wise counsel, his friendship and his passion for Drury.”

The Shewmaker Communications Center is named for Jack and Melba. Their generous contributions helped make the state-of-the-art center a reality. He and Melba also lent their name to part of the Trustee Science Center development The Shewmaker Gates, which serve as the entrance to Drury’s campus from the south.

“Jack’s primary concern was always for students,” said Dr. Charles Taylor, dean of the college. “Whether he was mentoring SIFE team members, assuring campus safety or improving the facilities in which they learned, his affection for and commitment to our students was deep and genuine.”

Shewmaker retired from Walmart Stores, Inc. in 1988 after serving in numerous capacities including president and chief operating officer. He is also a former chairman of Students in Free Enterprise, Inc., which is located in Springfield.

Services for Shewmaker will be held on Monday, Nov. 22, at noon at Fellowship Bible Church of Northwest Arkansas in Rogers, Ark.
