SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Feb. 15, 2012 — For the seventh consecutive year, Drury University students will perform Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues from Feb. 23-25 at 8 p.m. The performances will take place in the Findlay Student Center Ballroom at Drury University. The public is welcome to attend. Tickets cost $5. Proceeds from the event will benefit Springfield’s Harmony House.
Drury’s performance of the Vagina Monologues is sponsored by V Warriors, a student group dedicated to raising money and awareness for the treatment of women. The Vagina Monologues, which was originally performed as an off Broadway play, is comprised of a series of equally comical and emotional monologues that serve to express women’s relationships with their bodies and the issues women face throughout their lives, both in the U.S. and around the world.
The performance will take place in conjunction with the V-Day movement, a global campaign to end violence against women. “Performing the Vagina Monologues is not only a fun experience, but it is also a chance to give back to the Springfield community and be a small part of the worldwide campaign to end violence against women,” said Megan Waterman, a junior who has participated in V Warriors for two years.
T-shirts and other promotional materials will be sold before and after each show. All proceeds will be donated to Harmony House, a local safe place that provides services to women who have been abused.
Harmony House aims to provide shelter, advocacy and education to survivors of domestic violence, while also working to continually raise awareness about domestic violence within the community. According to its website, since the founding of Harmony House in 1976, it has provided care for over 10,000 survivors of domestic violence.
